Trailblazing pioneers or unoriginal hacks - there's no middle ground on opinions about nü-nü-metal band Stankeye. After years of slumming in dive bars, beer festivals and monster truck meets as a Papa Roach cover band (aptly named Last Resort), Dalton, Mikey, Cam and Bentley knew they were in rock limbo. But it was a bolt of inspiration in the form of a Norwegian exchange student that would change their lives. That exchange student was 6' 7" nuclear physics Ph.D (and black metal aficionado) Sven Fjordinsen,
"We were headlining a Georgia State University frat party," Dalton explains, "and we couldn't stop staring at Sven in the front row!" "He, like..." says Bentley, "...was wearing the United Nations of Black Metal: Mayhem eye makeup, Immortal spiky leather and Emperor lipstick... everyone else was running around in togas - " Dalton interrupts "- so naturally we had to meet him!"
Sven's demonic look, menacing stance and guttural moan gave the band the darkness to balance out their hedonistic vibe. "Plus he adds a solid lyric or two about nihilism or nothingness every song or two; often in Old Norse, which makes it even cooler!" says Dalton. "But," Cam explains, "he's loves a good keg stand and dirt bike race, so he fits right in with rest of the band!"
The crowds are bigger, but there's a lasting sentiment of ease with the band. "Half the audience still wears togas..." opines guitarist Mikey Newsome. "...but everyone's there for our songs, not someone else's."
