Ampersand Ümlaut leading a heavy (and very frilly) rock revolution
April 22, 2019
"The world needs balance, and so does everyone in their individual lives," remarks Ampersand Ümlaut lead guitarist (and harpist/lutist) Leopold DCLXVI. "What is the saying? 'Work Hard, Play Hard'? In our case, it's 'Look Prettier, Play Heavier'."
The Ümlaut boys do not disappoint with their new album, "Seal Your Fate". While they may look more and more like extras from the movie Amadeus, the songs are most bombastic than ever before. Drummer Maximillian The Corrupt attributes that to what they were listening to while recording the new release. "...'Back In Black' by AC/DC, early Slayer and lots of Metallica, especially 'Master Of Puppets' and 'S&M'..." notes Maximillian, "the latter being an absolute synergy of orchestra and metal."
But does this mean Ümlaut is distancing themselves, even perhaps shunning, their glam rock roots? "Never," says bassist (and lead octave spinetist) Ferdinand III 1/2. "Our songs are still about living the most decadent lives we can. Have you seen or read about the upper class in the 1600s and 1700s? it was like one big Mötley Crüe video, only with less leather and spikes and more velvet and lace."
"Seal Your Fate" comes out May 10.
