The story behind Brainhammer's biggest song - and album - comes from one the band's darkest moments.
Ricky MacCranium (bass) remembers vividly. "It was rough, man... the band was about to break up after the 'Embrace The Serpent' tour. We'd been on the road for over 2 years and burnt out. Not to mention that F.U. (Stanton - guitarist) and Hiddy (Kagetora - drummer) were still not speaking to the rest of us after the 'Alpaca Affair'. I had to do something to get the band back together."
Ricky continues: "I remembered that F.U. had a huge G.I. JOE toy collection but one thing he really wanted was the JOE headquarters base. Hiddy had a contact who had one in near mint condition and got it shipped over from Japan. Both of us brought it over to F.U. as a peace offering and it did the trick. I joked about a metal fortress bringing the band back together, and lightning struck. Between the three of us we came up with the melody and chorus and got the other blokes (vocalist Bjørn Svendsen; guitarists 'Reaper' Jones & Davy Robbins) back in the studio within a week. We even made a lifesized G.I. JOE base as our stage set for the 'Metal Fortress' tour, complete with water cannons to fire at the fans. That toy saved the band, man."
